Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday he wants to cut off money for the Iraq war next year, making clear for the first time that Democrats are willing to pull out all the stops to end U.S. involvement.

"In the face of the administration's stubborn unwillingness to change course, the Senate has no choice but to force a change of course," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who signed on Monday as a co-sponsor of Reid's proposal with Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio, voting record), D-Wis.

Reid has previously stopped short of embracing Feingold's position. When asked whether he would ever consider pulling funds for the troops, Reid said Congress would provide troops what they needed to be safe.
Reid's latest proposal would give the president one year to get troops out, ending funding for combat operations after March 31,2008.
"If the president vetoes the supplemental appropriations bill and continues to resist changing course in Iraq, I will work to ensure this legislation receives a vote in the Senate in the next work period," Reid said in a statement.(snip)
"It appears they're still content to work on a bill that does not have serious plans to fund troops or make Iraq, America and the world more secure, but rather attempts at forcing us into giving up in Iraq without regard to the consequences of failure," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.

Reid's proposal is unlikely to pass. But Democrats say they believe with each passing week — as the violence in Iraq continues and voters grow increasingly tired of the war — they pick up additional support.
The Senate last week passed its anti-war proposal by a 50-48 vote after winning support from Sens. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record), R-Neb., and Ben Nelson (news, bio, voting record), D-Neb., who just two weeks prior had opposed a similar measure.
Reid spokesman Jim Manley said if legislation to cut off funding for the war fails, Reid will try again with the hopes of getting new supporters. "It is the next in a series of steps to try to ratchet up the pressure to try to get the administration to change its policies," he said.
The bill to cut off funds for the war would likely be introduced as standalone legislation and would not be tied to the supplemental spending bill, Manley said.
Ah yes, the sweet sound of the purse strings, the blank check, the bowing to the king, having the door slammed in it's face. We, the People
I am not sure what's wrong with the Iranians. Don't they know we are a civilized nation and will not stand for mistreatment, let alone holding prisoners against their will? Making that poor woman wear a black scarf over her head, how dare they! We would never do or even think about such things! Or.. would we?
A British resident released from Guantanamo Bay after being held for more than four years has said that the US failed to observe fair legal processes at the detention camp.
Bisher al-Rawi, an Iraqi national and British resident, had been held at the US military base in Cuba since 2002, but was reunited with his family this weekend in England.
"Allegations are made against you that are laughably untrue, but you have no chance to prove them wrong. There is no trial, no fair legal process," al-Rawi said in a statement on Sunday.

"[Al-Rawi] has been held in Guantanamo Bay in total isolation – lights on, 24 hours a day, in a six-foot by eight-foot cell," he said.
Al-Rawi said in his statement issued through Reprieve that he wanted to advocate for the remaining British citizens held in Guantanamo Bay.
"I hope everyone who believes in justice and the rule of law will join with me to work for the release of Jamil and the other British residents," he said.
Britain has secured the release of all nine of its citizens who were held at Guantanamo but says the release of nine others who were resident in Britain but not nationals is not it's responsibility.
Responsabitity. Now, there's a word bushco doesn't understand. Accountability is another.

A victory? Fight against terrorism?
A federal appeals court in Washington in February upheld a key provision of a law enacted last year that strips federal courts of their ability to hear such challenges.
At issue is whether prisoners held at Guantanamo have a right to habeas corpus review, a basic tenet of the Constitution that protects people from unlawful imprisonment.
We demand the Iranians release the fifteen prisoners they have. Yet, we do not. Some at Gitmo have been held for five years.
We call the Iranians terrorists. Yet it is we who terrorize nations.
We celebrated the hanging of Saddam. Yet bush & co. has more blood on their hands than Saddam did.
We wave a flag and swear to God. Yet, we advocate torture. We murder, we lie, we judge, we hate. We allow spying on American citizens without just cause, without warrants. We do not care about others less fortunate, if it means using our money to care, yet we have no objection to using billions of our future children's tax dollars to murder in the middle east.
We are 28% of a country. We are the last remaining sheep of the bush administration. We care not. We are afraid. We are told to be afraid, therefore we are. We are told people want to kill us. Therefore they do. We do not bother to look back at the days leading up to 9/11. We place blame on the Clinton administration, because we are told to. We do not learn from past leaders mistakes and knowledge. We are afraid. We are civilized.

Before I vent, before complete outrage takes over my senses, I need to define, or redefine, as the case may be, what an American is.
An American is not a single nationality with a single religion. We are a group of people that come hundreds of different countries. We have hundreds of different faiths, if any at all. We are, or were, a melting pot.
I have been to Ellis Island, I have seen the Statue of Liberty. I don't think "Give me your tired, your poor, you're huddled masses yearning to breathe free...." is followed by, "as long as you live by Newt's rules." or even, "as long as you're a WASP."
Once again, newt gingrich, with his lips firmly planted on the bush administrations collective asses, shames our country. His hypocrisy and his kkk-like ethics have, at least me, fuming!
WASHINGTON - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual education Saturday with “the language of living in a ghetto” and mocked requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.
“The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up” to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

In the past, Gingrich has supported making English the nation’s official language. He’s also said all American children should learn English and that other languages should be secondary in schools.
In 1995, for example, he said bilingualism poses “long term dangers to the fabric of our nation” and that “allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is very dangerous.”
Dangerous, is this attitude Mr. Newt. How dare you speak for the American people with such hate and racism. I don't know why I'm so surprised, you and your party have been on an ethnic cleansing parade for quite some time. A "man" that divorced his cancer ridden wife, numerous extramarital affairs and two messy divorces has no right to lecture or speak of morality. I certainly do hope you run for president in 2008. I really do. I hope you even win your parties nomination. Then, you'll see just how disliked you and your fucked up opinions actually are. You should be ashamed!
