Happy Mothers Day!!

Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870, as a call for peace and disarmament. An excerpt follows:

“ From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace... ”

Howe failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a Mother's Day for Peace. Her idea was influenced by Anna Reeve Jarvis, a young West Virginia homemaker who, starting in 1858, had attempted to improve sanitation through what she called Mothers' Work Days. She organized women throughout the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions for both sides, and in 1868 she began work to reconcile Union and Confederate neighbors.

We, today want the same things as Ms. Howe. We want peace and we want our troops safe and home with their families. We want an administration that SEES the American people, sees the world as human beings as not as targets.

There is only one way we can accomplish the true meaning of Mothers Day. And we can do it in one voice. Visit our friends with the same voice. Our friends who act and react on our behalf. They are a small sound of our one voice.

To all the moms, those who are married to moms, have moms, have sisters and sister-in-laws that are, might be, might want to be moms, these are for you. Forget the flowers, the cards, the diamonds, give the true gift of Mothers Day. Give them peace. Call for the immediate removal of our troops and the immediate removal of this war mongering administration.

Move On!

At the risk of repeating myself, we are not alone. We, together form one voice, one hope. United we stand.

Happy Mothers Day!
