Redford demands apology over Iraq

Hollywood legend Robert Redford has called on US leaders to apologise for the war in Iraq.
The actor was speaking at the start of the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where the opening movie recalled protests over the Vietnam war in 1968.

Redford said he, like many others, had shown a "spirit of unity" with the US government after 11 September 2001.

"We put all our concerns on hold to let the leaders lead," he said. "I think we're owed a big, massive apology."

The actor, whose Sundance Institute for independent film runs the annual festival, usually steers clear of political messages in his opening speech.

Festival opener Chicago 10 recounts the demonstrations surrounding 1968's Democratic National Convention, which saw protestors clash with the National Guard.
Protestors clashed with Chicago police and the National Guard.

OK nothing gets my blood boiling more than these Hollywood people that think they should make policy and run the country. If Redford, Sheen, Striesand and the Baldwin boys have a better plan for things than maybe they should run for public office. Isn't what they are doing with their "outrage" and their idea of being a "moral authority" the same as Dr. Whatshername? You jump all over her about voicing her opinions (which for the most part I believe to be wrong) but embrace these people when they express theirs (which I also generally disagree with). Can't have it both ways. They all just need to shut the hell up until they have the guts to put their reputations on the line and run for office and try to make a difference by holding public office. Or are they all afraid of the public scrutiny that comes with the job of being a public servant. Oh and just for the record I believe Mayor Daly was a Democrat. During the riots following Dr Kings death it was he that gave shoot to kill orders to the police. The convention riots were also staged by radical Democrats who had grown disenchanted with LBJ.

Wasn't Reagan one of them there hollywood types, and weren't you, just on another thread, singing his praises?

Every American citizen has a right to stand up and bitch about the government. Every one. We can not, deny a group of people that right. It goes against everything democracy stands for.

My son it going to be on Live105 out of Ca. He is making his first video. Does this mean he no longer has a right to speak up? Voice an oppinion?

And I don't embrace them all, just the ones I agree with. Which, gives me Redford and you Spears.

Also, if you look back, the values of the Dems & Republicans in the 60's - you'll see we've switched places.

Walk into the light Larry, there's nothing to be afraid of dear.

Reagan wasn't afraid to throw his hat in the ring and serve as a public official under public scrutiny. Hmmm speaking of Alec Baldwin didn't he reneg on his promise to leave the country if "W" got elected? I guess he figured that no one else has a better system, might as well stay here.
I agree that everyone has the right ot voice their opinion. But, aren't you the same one criticising Dr. Laura for expressing hers? Or is it that freedom of speech only applies to liberal democrats? Dems & Reps switching places? Weren't the Democrats the Party that gave us George Wallace? The Democratic party has always thought itself the social conscience of America. They gave us the welfare state.
Shame on you for embracing the double standard that only speech that agrees with yours is free. You need to enter the light my dear friend. Take off the blindfold of the left and meet me and the majority of Americans in the center.

First of all dear, make no mistake, I do not like what she has to say. Yet I will defend, to the death, her right to say it.

I have no double standard dear. I can't dispute those I agree with, only those I don't. And do I not have a constitutional right to speek out against what I see as injustices? Let alone an obligation.

The only difference between people like us taking on issues and them is, they have the media following them, we don't. So yes, I'm sure it can get annoying to you. Kinda like Toby Keith, Spears et al. to me. But again - I will defend, to the death their right to say it. And right after that, I will sit at my PC and bitch about it. Because that sir, is my constitutional right - one of the few remaining I might add...

Hey, I never said I liked all dems. I'm registered a Democrat. But I don't vote my party lines. I vote issues.

And, as I have stated before, there would be no need for a welfare state if there were a chicken in every pot. You can't want outsourcing of jobs and companies, a depressed economy, high gas prices, high cost of living and low pay and no welfare too. That's wanting it both ways.
