WTF!!

Activist arrested for feeding homeless in Orlando

MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- Police have arrested an activist for feeding the homeless in downtown Orlando, Florida.

Eric Montanez, 21, of the charity group Food Not Bombs was charged with violating a controversial law against feeding large groups of destitute people in the city center, police said Thursday.

Montanez was filmed by undercover officers Wednesday as he served "30 unidentified persons food from a large pot utilizing a ladle," according to an arrest affidavit. The Orlando area is home to Disney World and Universal Studios Florida.

The Orlando law, which is supported by local business owners who say the homeless drive away customers but has been challenged in court by civil rights groups, allows charities to feed more than 25 people at a time within two miles (3.2 kilometers) of Orlando City Hall only if they have a special permit. They can get two permits a year.

Police collected a vial of the stew Montanez was serving as evidence.

Police spokeswoman Barbara Jones said in an e-mail it was the first time anyone had been arrested under the feeding ban.

Montanez was charged with a misdemeanor.

This law was pushed by all the merchants in downtown Orlando and I am surprised it hasn't been enforced before. The same or similar statutes have been passed by a number of cities with homeless 'problems'(that means tourists aren't supposed to see that we can't take of our own).
The funny(not haha) is that these so called christians would have arrested Jesus for feeding all those people at the Sermon on the Mount.

You're right, they would. It's so sad, making it illegal to help your fellow man.

I suppose that starved dead bodies would be better for business?
It amazes me ,the regulations governments come up with. Out here in my town, it's illegal to eat food in the park because a group got into feeding the homeless from a catering van that parked at the park. Duh.
They apparently think the homeless will go just away? There is also a regulation now against sleeping in cars. So what's a person to do if they've been driving all night? Used to be you could ........pull off the road and sleep.
Pffffffffffffft!

Rudy Giuliani's claim to fame is making being homeless illegal in NYC. Well, that and refusing to give the police and firefighters working radios, after discovering they didn't work in 1992...

Ah yes, the moral right has no compassion!

Paul, I find it interesting that Walmart allows you to park and sleep in their parking lot. They will even keep a camera on your car, to make sure you snooze safe.

I know these guys! They come to a number of our peace protests and we all bring cans of food for them. They hold up signs saying, Don't Bomb People - Feed Them. I might also say, they have a great sense of humor. They took a vial of the stew? How weird is that? We have a big homeless population in the winter as many somehow get down here to survive the weather. Something has to be set up to help these people on a regular basis, cause what we're doing right now isn't working.

This is unbelievably pathetic. They are against welfare. They are against compassion. And here is a charity worker who is not ASKING anyone or particularly the govt for help and STILL they fuck with him.

I don't know about you guys, when there is finally an action against poverty, you still cry your already previously bleeding hearts out! By making poverty against the law, preferably punishable by death, we can take our vension on those that dare to be anti-American by being poor and raising the property values in the one bright stroke. Not to mention, how much nicer it will be when all the eye sores are finally removed. The police could be also utilized to hunt them down the way they used to do so effectively in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. >:-C

This totally pissed me off! These Jackasses are worried about their fellow man feeding the homeless, yet they go around preaching WWJD! Absolutely disgusting!!! Way for these assholes to "help" their fellow man. It's funny they have money for war's but can't feed the poor and if someone else tries to without asking them for ANYTHING in return they get arrested! Just shows how stupid some people really are like I said IGNORANCE IS BLISS- I GUESS!!!
